Are Custom Cabinets Worth the Cost?
Have you been thinking about a kitchen or bathroom remodel? If so, you’re probably reconsidering your cabinets. Cabinets and storage are one of the items that returns even more of a remodeling investment—but how do you know if they’re worth it? Should you get custom-built cabinets, or should you opt for ready-made options that will do the job… even if they’re not exactly what you want?
Here is what to consider when you’re thinking about custom-built cabinets.
What kind of kitchen do you have?
If you already own an easy-to-outfit modern kitchen, with nearly-brand-new cabinets and appliances, cabinetry is probably not high on your list. On the other hand, if your kitchen is oddly-shaped or was built in the early 1900s, it’s probably time to get an expert in to address your cabinetry needs. What worked in the 1920s doesn’t necessarily work now, especially when it comes to storage. Modern families have modern needs, and cabinets are part of the package.
Cabinetry options
Luckily, you don’t have to get completely custom-built cabinets—unless you want to, or your kitchen is so oddly constructed that there’s no other choice. There are a few different levels of cabinet carpentry that will help you achieve the look you want:
- Stock cabinets: Stock cabinets, as you might imagine, are either pre-assembled or ready to assemble. This type of cabinetry is designed for standard-sized and shaped kitchens, which don’t need a lot of help to transform into something else. The downside to stock cabinets is that they don’t necessarily conform to normal kitchen sizes, which means you might end up with false panels, empty spaces and other quirks that make them less attractive overall. In fact, you might already have these issues in your own kitchen or bathroom.
- Semi-custom cabinets: Semi-custom cabinets allow you to pick your options within a certain set of pre-determined factors. You can choose doors, hardware, finishes and other storage solutions for your kitchen or bathroom, within the parameters that the company has designated. This can be a great choice if you’re building a new home or have a reasonably sized kitchen or bathroom already.
- Fully custom cabinets: Finally, there are fully custom-built cabinets. When you get fully custom cabinets, they’re actually built to the exact measurements of your kitchen or bathroom. Even if there are weird quirks or your room isn’t exactly rectangular, you’ll still maximize the amount of storage space available. Plus, if you have very specific or even unusual requests for your cabinets—perhaps you want a kitchen mixer to rise out of a deep drawer beneath your countertop—your cabinet contractor will be able to take your wishes into account and create cabinets that truly meet your needs.
